Use of local hardwoods from the Clan MacDonald Estate
and the many attractions of the Sleat peninsula.

The majority of the furniture produced by the Isle of Skye Furniture Makers is constructed from local hardwoods from the Clan MacDonald Estate. However, customers can specify any type of wood to be used in the construction of their piece of furniture and is bought in from a variety of sources.

The Clan Donald estate covers a large area of the Sleat Peninsula stretching from the southern most tip of Skye (Point of Sleat) to Sassaig. The woodland is a mix of deciduous and coniferous trees comprising a wide range of ages. As part of the constant management of the woodland sustainability is of paramount importance. We often use timber from windblown trees thus leaving the living woodland intact for future generations.

SLEAT (pronounced 'slate' rather than 'sleet') is the green and wooded southern peninsula of the Isle of Skye which is in sharp contrast to the rest of Skye with its towering Cuillin mountain ranges and imposing sea cliffs and moorland.

The wildlife on Sleat is diverse and ever changing with fields of bluebells, banks of Rhododendrons, meadows of wild flowers in the summer; Deer roam the interior of Sleat and otters play in the numerous sea bays. With so many walks, wildlife, nature trails and inspiring views Sleat is an idyllic location and it therefore comes as no surprise the area has been a great influence on the design of the furniture we produce.

Although retaining all its rural character, Sleat is home to a thriving Gaelic College at Ostaig offering music, Gaelic culture and verse, an award-winning Visitor Centre at Armadale Castle (Clan MacDonald Estate) and a variety of accommodation and tourist attractions.
